Turned end grain from Hickory, I drilled out the pith (~1.5") when rough turning this piece. Having the pith removed allowed air to flow through the piece, helping the wood to dry quickly with no cracks at the bottom. Overall height is 14 inches. Finished with lacquer except for the cross which is walnut finished with WOP. Comments and critiques welcome.

That looks great!!! What did you plug the hole with? When did you plug it?

I plugged the hole with a piece of Elm after the rough-out dried. I gently expanded a chuck in the top opening and used a steady rest to support the piece while I trued up the bottom into a tapered opening. I then mounted a chunk of dry Elm on a faceplate and turned a tapered plug to match. Next I glued the plug in with tail-stock support using Titebond.

I like it. How did hickory turn? I have a ton of it but have just walked past 15-20 bowl blanks for two years, preferring maple or madrone.

This hickory turned easily, but that is not true of all hickory. I don't know enough about hickory to guess which ones are better. I do know that it can be turned fresh or dry but partially dry is bad news.
