Hi folks,

This is the first turning from that Blank Grab Bag I got from John. This first piece is spalted ash. It was very soft and being a relative newbie at this I haven't done much work with spalted materials. I had a hard time with tearout even using every trick I know and the piece actually ripped off the tenon. I had to mount the piece upside down and continue...so most of the spalting is on the bottom. The piece is probably 1/8th to 3/16th's of an inch wall thickness and 6" in diameter by 3" tall.

You made a great save Bill. I just had a bowl become a saucer today. At least you have the form you started with and it looks good.

Bill,

Sometimes I feel like sending you wood so I don't ruin it!!!:D That is just beautiful. You're providing me with much needed inspiration.

Thanks all for the overly generous words.

I will admit though that it was at least a good recovery.

Bill I really like the spalting on the bottom! It looks like it is growing up from the bottom. It looks great!
