I've searched the forum to try to find where this question has no doubt been previously answered many times - to no avail. I have a Delta 1460 serial number 96-9231 which means according to the Rockwell Power Tool Division PM-1532 Operational Manual (see below) ....

NOTE: All Delta 1460 Wood Lathes with serial numbers
prior to 128-1312, contained two identical bearings
and preload shims. With this method of construction,
spindle or bearing replacement could not
be satisfactorily made unless the entire headstock
was returned to our factory so that the exact amount
of preload could be applied to the new bearings.

My front bearing is running rough so I pulled my headstock spindle .. and viola, the bearing numbers match. That means (I assume) the spindle is the old spindle. How do I rebuild this with replacement bearings and get the correct pre-load? Do I try and calculate a difference in bearing width and then shim according to the shim initially installed? Does anyone remember if there is an article that describes this?

Here is a link to that manual. http://vintagemachinery.org/pubs/1141/882.pdf
