In the wake of the loss of her son, my daughter has asked me to make a memory box for her. She has decided on either a light wood like maple or she wants something with a warm red tone.

What would be a good wood for the red choice? I will be in laying the lid with mother of pearl with a design she will provide.

Thanks

I like Honduran Mahogany for such applications.

Ditto.

I'm sorry for your loss. Your other option is Cherry - won't start out red, it will start out quite light, but that will change. Over the years As the sharpness of loss fades, good memories become strong, the color deepens.

For your purpose ,I agree with Art. Mahogany , when finished with just oil and wax , has a special feel that just seems precious and comforting.
