Can anybody tell me what kind of wood this is or what
this red pattern in the wood is called? The sawyer thought
it was some type of poplar. Now if I can get the pictures to post you might know what I am talking about.

Hi Scott,

By the feel of it I would say it is probably Cherry. I have never seen any poplar with red in it. Could be box Elder which is known for some red streaking.

Scott, it is most likely box elder. However, I've seen ambrosia maple come close to that. I would put money on box elder though.

I agree with Todd. Box Elder.

Box Elder. Note that much of the red streaking will disappear with age.

Agreed box elder. Here is a read on how these form.

Although I have seen tulipwood similarly colored. But I doubt it's tulipwood since it grows in Brazil.

I'd say it's box elder, but only cuz that's what everyone said :D .....honestly, I didn't have a clue. You'll find something interesting to make from it!

Box elder. And a truly fine piece it is. The red streaks are from stresses that the tree has sustained. I guess it ain't easy being a tree.
