When I lower the spindle you can grab the end of the drill bit and make quill wobble. Hence, the holes are not perfectly round.

Any idea what needs replaced?

I do not think you will like my answer, so I will save it for now. Check out this link on checking run-out. Tom http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?154398-Drill-press-runout&highlight=drill+press+spindle+runout

When the quill is fully retracted, it is solid. When I extend it, I can grab the end of the quill and make it wobble. The lower the quill goes, the more it wobbles. When fully extended, it must moves enough that you see the movement and hear the clunk as it travels from side to side. No split head. Bad news....

My brother builds machines. If he cannot help me, it looks like an opportunity to get a new one. YAY new drill press.

BTW - Thanks for the link Thomas.
