I've heard a broken bandsaw blade works well as scratch stock. I don't own a bandsaw, so I'm wondering what type of metal (thickness and type of steel) I should order from the ol' mail-order supply house? Thanks in advance.

BTW, for anyone who's in the same boat as me, a dull Sawzall blade works well if you have one lying around. Unfortunately, I didn't have the foresight to save them as they wore out. Live & learn.

Lend me your hacksaw and I'll break the blade for you. That'll give you some stock with which to scratch.:D

Forgive my ignorance, but what is "scratch stock?"

I believe John is looking for material to make his own profiles for a beading type tool. Something like this... http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?DeptID=2114&FamilyID=572 (tail-less router)

I think I've also seen them in the form of a marking gauge to run along the edge of a board.

An old (or cheap) hand saw could also be a possibilty if you need something a little larger than band-saw stock can yield.
