I know this has been covered here before. Right now I have a Great 1 1/2HP baldor motor with just a shaft sticking out. Can someone explain to me with detail, what it will take to turn this into a 12" disc sander. I have access to a great machine shop for anything I will need. Thanks. Sam

Start off right by posting a design you like- there are many as you can see, then ask particulars:
Disk sanders (https://www.google.com/search?q=home+made+disk+sander&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&hs=uts&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=sb&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=QVUBU5CcK-STyQHvrYDwBg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1269&bih=765)

Forget the disc sander. Build an edge sander instead you'll be far better off. Speaking from 40 years custom and and industrial shop experience I have used every Sander you can imagine and more than you can imagine.

Have had disk sanders before and sold them. An edge sander is waaaaaay better.

Assuming your motor has a 5/8" shaft, ShopSmith will sell you a 12" sanding disk that attaches directly to motor shaft. Forget using Velcro disks though. I find that they round over edges too much

Ok. Well after doing some homework, I decided that an edge sander would best fit my needs. So my next question is, what other uses could I have for that new motor I have. I got it at a flea market for dirt cheap.

Can't do without my buffing set up. Might be something you consider?

Well, for one you can make a fellow woodworker happy and sell it to him what you paid for it. :D

I was thinking buffing wheel too. I only paid 30 dollars for it.. Came from a storage locker.. At a flea market, it's still on the small pallet, with the shrink wrap, I wanna use it for something. But I plan on getting an edge sander tmrw anyway.
