I am thinking about build my wife a small folding table for craft shows mainly it will be used for other stuff to I am sure. It needs to be relatively light. And fit into a small car. (2 door sun fire) any tips on how to design it to meet these requirements? I can get final dimensions by measuring the car. What I was thinging is something like a card table you fold in the middle? Any ideas thanks

That is a little smaller then what I was thinking I was thinking more like a card table with a seem down the middle where it would fold.

You can make it wider to make it any size you like. The basic design allows you to open it up and set it down. The design is stable after you set it.
You can buy server stands like this at many arts and crafts shows. I have one around here some where.

ok, maybe that could work do you have plans available? I would have to measure car and see if leg length would be an issue. that is main reason I was thinking card table style, is you could have the legs fol in, then the table fold.

I found my tray. I will make a plan in Sketchup. It may take a day or two before I can finish it.

Superbowl is tonight.

There is a light folding table documented in Shopnotes #98. Here is a reference to the online extras:

The png file is a parts list drawing for the stool and the TV table. I can't find the drawing for the picnic table but I can measure the one in my shop office later today if anyone wants the dimensions.

The drawing date is 1991 so its been awhile since my Dad and I made folding furniture. We use to save all of our long thin project scraps and at the end of every month build stools and tables. I'm guessing but I think we must have made about two hundred folding stools and at least 50 each of both table sizes. We had a set of assembly fixtures that really cut the time down when making these in mass quantities. All of the ones we built were made from white oak with one exception, I made myself a TV table from Ash.

As I recall we finished these with a healthy coat of paste wax. If I ever make any more I would use Corian, it would be heavier than oak but won't require a finish and they could be left out in the weather.

Here's a folding table fron Wood Magazine. It's a different take from most.

So far, I've made two of those - modified slightly from the plans.
IIRC, the plans call for 1/2" plywood for the top.
I used 1/4" pegboard & it's fine for a light duty table.

One of the next ones I make is going to have a piano hinge in the middle and fold in half.

I skipped putting the fold down legs on mine and just use plastic folding sawhorses.

Honestly though - for the ultimate in lightweight portability, nothing can top a pair of trestles and three or four 1x8's or 1x6's.

I used to use that setup for hanging wallpaper way back when...

Keith with the 33" long legs, how tall is the table when set up? I am about to make a few of these for the wife as we saw one a few weeks ago and she said you can make me a couple of these. TIA Bob

Chris Schwarz just showed an interesting knockdown table on his blog. It's from his campaign furniture work. Depending on the length of the stretchers it may or may not fit in a car easily.
