This was posted on rec.woodworking the other day. I consider my router and lathe as two rabid dogs ready to bite my butt the minute I let down my guard. I don't think I'd ever let them gang up on me.

I believe the jig could be used in a safe way but I would not use that jig on such an out of round blank.

That's one way to do ornamental work ... too many moving parts for me though.

Paul set up for ornamental there are less moving parts than an ornamental lathe and I can do 6 feet linear. the cross feed pumps instead of rocking the whole spindle assembly :)

I saw a very large piece, 6'+ diameter turned on a "lathe" with a router for the cutting tool, but the router was held in a fixture with screw feed in XYZ directions so had good control and slow feed rate. I did not get the video to play, but no, I am not going to use a router with my lathe unless it is to do some groves or similar with the spindle fixed and router in jig, and even that is doubtful. Plain turning is too much to do all the extra work.

That was one of the dumbest things I've ever seen posted on YouTube, and I think we all know what a statement that is...

Whatever. Other than a too long router bit, too rough a blank, a clamped on motor with no belt guard, I don't see a problem.

That's one butt-ugly spindle though.

That's thinking out of the box! I have a few weird procedures of my own. The first comment is always "it won't work" followed by "that's way too dangerous". Always by people who have never done it once--much less a dozen times. Negative is contagious.

He is a wild and crazy guy. I would never try that, however you must admit he made a copy in under 10 minutes. Usually my bright ideas end up with a trip to the hospital.

I think we will hear more about this guy "router bit breaks and embeds itself in man's head" would likely be the story lead.

Simple answer, no. Not saying isn't onto something. But no, I wouldn't. Looks like too much could go wrong...
