Recently rehabbed a Sargent Co. jack plane. 280282(before the rust was gone) Depth Adjuster wheel is steel. Handles are just plain Mahoganey280285280286(sitting next to a Ohio Tool Co. #05c) Wheel USED to have a brass plating to it, but has since been replaced by rust. Frog does not have the "Horseshoe" style lateral lever, just a plain jane one. Frog face is also plain, no groovies showing. There is a "SARGENT" on a raised area behind the knob. There is a "414" behind the frog. Lever cap and the frog have the number 409 stamped into them. Iron is stamped as a SARGENT 414, and does have a nice camber to it. Thinking it MIGHT be a type 4, WWII era? Lever cap also has SARGENT cast into it.

Maybe more about that 05c in another post....

With the Ohio Tool co. #05c, at least I know when they weren't being made any longer, about 1920 or so Iron on the 05c is stamped for the Auburn, NY time. It does have a nice low knob, though. The tote is nice and thick, too. It came with a faded red paint job, seems that it was once a Crimson colour. Tried to recapture that colour. Iron has a hex shaped hole instead of the round ones of Stanley. Iron is also laminated. Lateral has a twisted end, almost like Union used. Wheel is a small brass one, right hand threads. Might be almost 30 years older than the 414???

Kind of hard to get exactly what this jack is
Base seems to be a type 4, c model

Frog and lever cap have a "409" stamp to their undersides
There is a 414 between the tote and frog
lateral lever is just a plain, bent piece of steel. ends in an "L" shape where it meets the iron, and has a closed up double bend at the other end.
On the iron, Sargent, then a NO. then a 414, then the address.
Wood is just Mahoganey, nothing fancy.
Wheel was a brass plated steel, most of the brass plating is gone. Was quite rusty, cleaned up to just the steel.
There is a raised rectangle behind the knob, with "SARGENT" cast into it.

Thinking about WWII era??
