Where to find, what to call it?

I've seen them before, bend it around an object or into a space, transfer that shape to your work piece.

I'd love to find one about 16" or so. I did actually Google 'bendy stick' and lots of toys came up but I didn't see anything carpentry related.

Lil' help?

Try the google for "flexible curve". That might be what you are asking about.

I can think of two items (for different purposes) that fit your description in different ways... a "flexible curve" and a "profile gauge". I mention the profile gauge as it's more appropriate for getting fine detail, but the flexible curve better fits your description of length. Flexible curves aren't really designed for transferring the shape of an object.

There is also this one, better suited to transferring a shape:

Or this one (scroll down about halfway to "Steel Flexible Curve")

I received these drawing bows as a Christmas present, but haven't had the chance to use them yet. Just from playing with them I think that they'll work well for larger projects, like perhaps a bed headboard.

Flexible curves! Reminds me of my first girlfriend. Thanks to all!

After a long week all I could come up with was bendy stick. :)

Jerry, those steel flexible curves are awesome! That's going on my 'gotta have' list.

But for now, one of the less expensive bendy curves.

Thanks again.

The Asymmetric bow is very cool. I gotta bookmark all this stuff.

There's a joke in there about when no girlfriend… but I digress :)

I have no pictures, but i have a lot of thin rips from off-cuts in a barrel and some twine. I have a few different lengths to use as faring sticks but only for symmetrical curves. I do like that asymmetrical bow at Lee Valley though. If we ever win the lotto--i'm calling Lee Valley and just tell them to load up a 53' trailer an send it over...that's my idea of a toy store!!

I have one of these. I've it a few times and I really like it. $10 as part of CL bundle.
