Joe, thats a good question as standard 1 1/4 " USS has 7 TPI and 1 1/4" SAE has 12 TPI. I would think you will probably have to get a machine shop to fabricate one. Someone said that they were used in the construction indudtry, I would be very much interested in which manufacturer is using 8 TPI. Trust I have helped out, good luck.

Could you share any source that you could find?

I checked a few links and couldn't find a 1 1/4 X 8 nut :-(

Bruce,
A lot of wood lathes use 8 tpi on the headstock spindles, very common it seems.

I found a 1"x8tpi hex nut for my JET mini at a place called "TRACTOR SUPPLY".....sort of a farm store. They sell their big nuts and bolts by the pound. I think the nut cost me about 40 cents!!

Mike and Randy I think you misunderstood me or perhaps Joes requirements. His headstock is 1 1/4" in diameter and 8 tpi and that is not a standard size. Like I said in the answer to Joes original question, standard USS thread pitch for 1 1/4 " nut is 7tpi & SAE 1 1/4" nut thread pitch is 12tpi. Yes Mike, many lathes use 8tpi head stocks 1' , 1 1/8", 1 1/4" & 1 1/2" shafts. Of all these only the 1" 8tpi is a standard USS size and that is why Randy was able to get one at a tractor supply store. Trust I haven't totally confused you or others, just trying to be helpful.

There are three "standard" thread series in the Unified screw thread system.

UNC- course
UNF- fine
8-UN- 8 thread series.
8-UN is available in sizes form 1" to 1-1/2"

Robert,

That is the first time I've seen the spec in writing for this type of nut to fit lathe spindles.

Now I know the rest of the story,

Thanks,

Clem

Your welcome Clem, Bruce is correct in the fact that a Tractor Supply or HD does not carry them as "standard". You will have to go to a Fastenal or a speacialty fastener supplier to get them, but they are a standard thread size.:)
