The art of boatbuilding (pics)

It was a couple of lucky days for me as I got to inspect this 48' Eldridge-McInnis schooner. In all probability the most professionally maintained wood boat I have had the pleasure to inspect. Launched in 1992, she was built in California by two gentleman that had accumulated a combined experience of sailing and building that allowed them to create a masterpiece and a tribute the the art of boatbuilding.
Those of you that read "WoodenBoat" magazine may remember her from being
on the cover of issue # 108 back in 1992.

Wow, that is a beautiful schooner! Kent, I am curious - in the fourth picture, second post, what is the brass trimed rectangular object that is above the small shelf & below the picture?

That boat is finastkind. Very nice work and clearly well maintained. What a joy it must have been to inspect her.

Bruce, that rectangluar thing you asked about would be a stove, I believe. They did a nice job of making it look like a little fireplace. Some used to de wood fired but I don't know if this one is.

edited to add: If you look at the last picture of that beatiful skylight, you'll see behind it what appear to be two funnels with their mouths together. That would be the chimney from that stove.

It probably doesn't get used a lot in California but it I'm there are a few evenings when it is nice to hve the warmth.

Dave is correct in that it is a small fireplace. It will take little pieces of wood scrap and turn them into cozy little feelings of comfort. By the way it can get quite nippy here on the bay when the fog is in and temps are in the 40's.

And Yes, I do like my job :) :)
