I can't tell you how to know when something is real jade, but I know that in Asia the best jade is considered to be the very light, almost translucent jade. The dark green jade is not very desirable and doesn't bring a very high price.

There is no really effective test by laymen. There are some things you can observe to determine clear fakes. Specific gravity test is generally better but it may fool you when good quality jade is glued over cheap jade.

When we traveled in Alaska there were several jade shops featuring Alaskan Jade which is mined in ALaska. A location not mentioned in the DIY site.
