I have an opportunity to cut some willow if I want it. It doesn't appear to be weeping willow, just a variety growing wild in So Ga.
Any y'all ever turned any?

I have turned a couple types of willow; Black willow is very pretty but is very soft and tricky to cut cleanly. The other was pale and bland, slightly easier to cut but still somewhat fuzzy.

It is stringy, but can be turned with a little patience and sharp tools.

I managed to get a hold of a decent Willow burl block since that thread... I like the stuff.

I turned some willow from a tree a neighbor cut down a couple of years ago. I don't have a picture at the moment, but I do recall that it turned wet very nicely, I got a little bit of warp out of it that I wanted, and there was some beautiful feathering and chatoyance in the wood. Personally, I would really love to get a hold of some more as I had a great experience and a successful project with it.

I turned some willow. It was block of wood so I have no idea if it was weeping willow or not. It reminded me a lot of cherry including the aroma. I would jump on the opportunity every time free wood comes around....at least until the LOML becomes the SWMBO....and there was no room left for her to park her car in my garage shop.

Turned some large log sections several years ago. The stuff was fresh cut and the wood was perfectly black out to the bark.. Finished out like heart walnut. I have worked walnut for 50 years and one large willow bowl was the prettiest piece of walnut I've ever seen. Heartwood or mineral stain?? Like many soft weak woods the stuff liked to be cut to final dimentions fresh green with no warping ect.
