I don't build much furniture. No time for it. But a friend has hired me to build a TV stand to match his existing entertainment center. He's wanting hardware I can't find and I'll be honest, I'm not sure what terminology to use for a search.

Here's the pic he sent me. I'm not having any luck with Google. Blown up it gets pretty grainy, but that's all i have work with.

Here's one hardware site you can browse.

"knobs" and "escutcheons" and/or "backplates" can help you search elsewhere

Thanks. You'll have to escutcheon my ignorance.

Here's some ideas to start with:

Inset doors use Butt Hinges (https://www.google.com/search?q=cabinet+butt+hinges&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&hs=ufd&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=0vOnUtr8HqbMsATVroHwDw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1208&bih=752)

The knobs shown are 2- piece assemblies consisting of the Knobs (https://www.google.com/search?q=cabinet+knobs&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&hs=vld&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=R_WnUr2oN7jNsQT_rIGoCw&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1208&bih=752)themselves and Escutcheon Backplates (https://www.google.com/search?q=cabinet+knob+escutcheon&newwindow=1&client=firefox-a&hs=vmd&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=hfWnUt6ELuipsATOsIEg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1208&bih=752).

If you don't have time to build furniture, how long do you think it'll take to make that?
3-4 months? 1-2years?
Certainly isn't an easy project. Took me a month to build this, working on it almost every day.
And I'm retired, so I had the time.

That's a nice looking piece Myk, a tool chest?

I build custom cabinets for new homes, occasional remodels, and I'm in the middle of two jobs and have a very large one waiting "on deck". His TV cabinet is low priority but I'll get it built around Christmas.

For me, it's a different construction method. I'm not set up to do furniture. I still don't have a jointer in my shop (I'm currently shopping) and my bandsaw is a measly 10" Jet (I used to cut arches and templates). I could build what my friend wants in a couple days, including the doors using my cabinet method.

I live in a market where a man would starve to death trying to make even "mediocre" grade furniture.

Myk, that's a beautiful chest.

Thanks. Yep. A tool chest. Took a big pile of cherry to build it.

Have you tried Lee Valley?

I haven't, Jim, but I will. I'm about to have the friend find his own hardware! ;) I have as much time in looking for hardware similar to the pic as I did in drawing up the cabinet itself.

Nice job Myk, northern cherry is much lighter in color than the southern variety.
Will your tool chest age over time and get darker?

The reason I ask is because cherry is one of the best wood species to laser engrave. The contrast is perfect but decreases over time as cherry gets darker. A forty year old bedroom set will get so dark the engraving would be almost impossible to see.

The cherry has been darkening very well.

+ 1 to White Chapel it's a great source and will have very nearly exactly what you see in the photo.

Ive bought knobs and hinges off Etsy.com . Usually its something vintage or one of kind, before you make your purchase do a quick search you might find a metal-worker that makes one or something better

Thanks everyone. Who knew picking out hardware would be so time consuming?

Try http://www.robinsonsantiques.com/ , They only sell original antique/vintage stuff, no reproductions. In fact, looking at that piece, it may not be old enough for their inventory but they do have an awful lot of pieces. I've used them a few times and they are great people to deal with. Take some good pictures and be prepared to email them to them. And be sure to call and speak to them personally.

Well, after I spent a few hours of research and finally picked something out for him (and told him the cost) his reply was, "I'll do the knobs." MUUUURPHY!!!! Oh well. I learned of a lot of new sites for cool hardware. Take the good...
