The "Mustard Monster" has arrived to join the other new machine delivered this week in my shop (Hammer A3-41) http://festoolownersgroup.com/Smileys/default/thumbup.gif

The Powermatic 3520B is part of my "LifeLong Tools" woodshop refurb odyssey. I have not turned since Middle School, but remember how much I enjoyed it, so this is a permanent addition to the shop, and I'm looking forward to many hours making wood chips fly.

Some of you may know I was planning to buy the new Laguna 24-36 REVO lathe which was essentially the same price as the Powermatic. I was intrigued by Laguna's 3HP DC motor on their lathe. Then lo and behold, I got an email from my rep at Laguna to state that they had dropped the DC motor for unknown reasons and gone back to a VAC motor. I asked him to let me think on that for a few days. Hallelujah! While I was "thinking", Powermatic held a three-day Black Friday Sale with 15% off machines and 20% off accessories. Since the 3520B had always been the other choice, it became a no-brainer at $600.00 off the lathe alone and free shipping. http://festoolownersgroup.com/Smileys/default/drooling.gif

The lathe arrived today, and I am incredibly impressed by the way it was packaged from Taiwan. Very, very well done and secure. The next thing I loved was that every single bolt that had to be installed was the same size!! (8mm hex). No having to sort through a mixed bunch of nuts and bolts looking for the right one! http://festoolownersgroup.com/Smileys/default/smile.gif The machine is HEAVY (630 Lbs), and most of that in the bed, so I was able to get the legs on myself, but waited a couple of hours for my neighbor, a retired Marine, to come help me lift it upright. No problem. Finished installing components and the extension and all done except for electrical connect. (I will not be putting in 220V service until my next return from my work tour in Nigeria.) Nonetheless, the operators manual, packing, install and everything was first class. Bravo Powermatic (My first from them). Highly recommended, and this IS the standard for this size lathe. http://festoolownersgroup.com/Smileys/default/tongue_smilie.gif

I broke down with Laguna and ordered their Revo Mini-Lathe for little stuff. Should be here in a day or two! http://festoolownersgroup.com/Smileys/default/blush.gif http://festoolownersgroup.com/Themes/SilentWave/images/icons/modify_inline.gif

Congrats on the new machine. I'm a new owner also having purchased Nov. 1st from Tools Plus during their 15% discount. Just remember the 3,400 bucks you plopped down on the machine is only a down payment on all the other goodies your going to get real soon. Enjoy!!!!!!!

Boy, that's the understatement of the year! I'm planning for Easy Wood's (http://www.easywoodtools.com/) EasyChuck to begin with and a number of their carbon tipped tools. Also looking at D-Way's (http://d-waytools.com/) gouges and a CBN wheel for my grinder. Might add a swing-away for the tail stock from JT Turning Tools (http://www.jtturningtools.com/).

I am going to order a curved curtain rail (http://www.curtain-tracks.com/applications/workshops-paint-booths) and ceiling to floor curtains to surround the lathe and keep the rest of my shop and the cabinets free from chips. A system like the curtains you see in a hospital emergency room around examination beds.

I have suddenly found that I pay a great deal of attention to cast off wood left curbside, and in new subdivision lots that have just been been cleared!:D

Thanks Danny!

Expect to see me dragging my trailer down your dirt road around May/June when we get to Robins AFB. Looking forward to visiting your place again.... if I can find it again!:p
I didn't take any pictures, but I made an really, really nice jewelry box out of some of the walnut I got from you a few years ago. The recipient, the bride of a close friend, absolutely loved it. Ready for MORE!

Almost want to hang a sign out on the freeway entry ramps...."Will Work For Wood"!

Got me a new Hammer A3-41 to handle your "rough" wood too! It'll make quick work of jointing and planing to size!

Cheers,

Frank

Rumor has it that Powermatic is expected to raise their prices after the first of the year, so be careful waiting too long. They DO run 15% off sales now and then, but you can't count on it. The 3520B is the defacto standard for this size lathe, and I gotta say... it is worth every penny from what I've seen so far! (And that coming from someone who is NOT a Powermatic fanboy by any means)

Good luck,

Frank

Frank,

Look forward to seeing you again. I have added a kiln to the arsenal.
