Our extended family traveled to BC this past summer to go visit the great grand parents of our grandchildren (9) + 3 more of their grandson, while camping in one of the Provincial Parks one of my DIL came to me with a small rootburl, thought it looked interesting and maybe I would like it to turn, didn't look very appealing at that point and I had no idea of what wood it was, but assumed I would/could find out later when working it.

Anyway I told her if I ever did turn it, the outcome would be hers, good or bad , the reply was that was not why she gave it, but would accept it as I never made something she didn't like yet

Some weeks ago I did have some time and went to see what was in it, as soon as I cut the wood I smelled Thuja, aka western red cedar, though that is a misnomer, as it isn't Cedar.

Made this small vase from it, not the easiest wood to turn and get a smooth surface, outside was a little easier as I was able to use a skew for the final cut, sandpaper had to come to the rescue on the inside, as even the best cut wasn't very smooth all over.

Gave it to my DIL a few weeks ago when we drove to Ottawa for a longer visit (a 1000 Miles+), she was very happy with it :D.

Any comments are welcome :)

Thanks for the comments, it's appreciated, Robert the piece is small about 6"X4" IIRC, the grain makes it big :D
