Purchased on line a Stanley Hand brace with four patent dates on it.
Could anyone tell me the type or approximate age of of this tool.
I remember my Grandpa having one just like this one when I was a kid.
Helped him drill a hole with it, course he was doing most of the work..:).
Patent Date:
Oct 14 02
Apr 26 04
Feb 27 06
June 5 06

It looks like a #921. There should be a number on the the swing arm. They have Fray's 1888 patent chuck. It was made from 1905 to 1950.

With those patent dates it was likely made before 1917.

Thank you jtk,
Have not received it yet and the pictures on the ad did not show the other side of the swing arm.
Have used a Brace when I was younger like I previous stated, but also in Shop Class in High School.

I think most High Schools have done away with that sort of education now days, was my favorite class.
Do plan on using the Brace on extending my deck in the spring.

David,

You are welcome.

Have you found the Neanderthal wisdom/FAQs post?

http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?103805-Neanderthal-wisdom-FAQs

Near the bottom is a post by Bob Smalser, "The Incredibly Versatile Sweep Brace" and one by me, "A Bit About Augers."

Both are good reads to learn about your brace and bits.
