I was playing around with some off-center turning a few weeks ago and turned the top of this piece. As it was just an experiment, I didn't do any final finishing and left it sitting in my shop along with the DOZENS of other unfinished pieces. Well, my son saw it and mentioned that he liked it and later mentioned that he would like me to turn something (anything) as a gift for his birthday. I decided to finish it and make it a wall hanging for his apartment. In order to make it easier to hang on the wall without damaging the corners, I added the back piece.

Maple front and back, dyed and lacquered. 15" x 15"

Very nice, Eric! Beautiful color - what dye did you use? And, where on earth did you get such nice maple that large?

I like it a lot and I'm not sure why. The wood is wonderful, too.

Eric, great execution and creative design. The features really draw my attention. You could explore a whole series of this form. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments.

John, I used Transtint dyes - black followed by red. The maple came from a tree I harvested a few summers ago. (see my avitar) It was a huge tree. If I remember correctly, it took me about 6 Saturdays to get it all cut up and sealed. With my trailer, I'm much more efficient.

I liked it at first glance, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.....I agree with Bob. I could see a series of this design.

Thanks for the comments. I haven't considered a series, but I may give it some thought.
