We've never been there, and are planning an April coach trip from Phoenix, through the canyons and other sights, then ending up in Vegas.
We would like some hotel recommendations. One, maybe 2 nights. Can it be enjoyed in one night?
The casino isn't important as we don't gamble, nor are the shows, but we would like to stay somewhere convenient to the strip. Mainly for the night sights.
We looked at the Tropicana, but some reviews indicate it isn't that convenient to the strip. That doesn't mean that one is a bust, but would like a few suggestions.

This isn't what you asked, but if you want a much less expensive hotel room, try Henderson, NV. I was amazed at how inexpensive hotel rooms are there. Try the Station Casino in Henderson. I stayed there one time and was surprised at how nice the rooms were, especially for the price. You can see the strip from that hotel but it's not walking distance. You'd need to drive.

I haven't stayed in the Circus Circus for many years but it was a dump. All of the "name" hotels are okay.

Las Vegas is like Disneyland - It's usually crowded, and you have to stand in line for everything, often including the rest room. It's not my favorite place to visit.

We stayed at Planet Hollywood the last time there. The room was nice and a lot of the Vegas sights were within walking distance. The bus stop is right on the corner. I recommend taking a bus ride to Fremont Street to see the ‘old’ Vegas.
Give it two nights to see the sights.

We've stayed at around NY, NY about 10 years ago and Treasure Island about 6 years ago. Both were good (at least then) both are convenient. I would not stay at Circus Circus--been in there and it was pretty run down. I had the same impression of the Tropicana, but I think they were going to put some money into the place. Don't stay at the Harmon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Harmon) either, no matter how good a rate someone offers. :D

I stayed at the Mirage a few years ago. It was pretty nice. No complaints. Not sure if they still have the volcano outside or not.

Just in case you do get in the mood for a show, we saw The Ultimate Variety Show at Planet Hollywood. It is fairly inexpensive, relative to the other Vegas shows, pretty clean and was thoroughly enjoyable. That was also a few years ago.

My wife and I did not gamble but enjoyed watching the craps tables.

The buffets are pretty good; our favorite was the Spice Market at Planet Hollywood. The one at the Bellagio was good too but more expensive.

Its been twelve years since I was there, but we stayed at Ceasers, in a suite overlooking Belagio's fountains and the strip. Pretty hard to beat the location of that. When we were there, it was a nice place. Belagio was nicer, but new and too booked. Fun times, wonder why we haven't been back, come to think of it....

You may want to check out the places on Freemount st or like what was said about The Station. The company I work for has a hose in Henderson not far from the Station.

We stayed at the Marriott Grand Chateau about a month ago for a wedding. One block off the strip near Planet Hollywood and the Belagio. Kitchen in the room for breakfast and snacks, roof bar and pool with great evening views of the strip. "Reasonable" prices for Las Vegas

I used to go to Las Vegas every year for Comdex. Don't remember how many years I went but it was a lot.

Perhaps my favorite story was one year when the company booked us into Caesar's. When I arrived, another company guy was at the desk. The clerk told us that some people had not left, as planned, and he wouldn't have rooms for us until the next day. He asked us if we would share a room for one night, and he comp'ed us something (I don't remember what). We said "Sure" and got the keys.

When we got to the room, we found it had a round bed (and a second bed), mirrors on the ceiling and red velvet wallpaper. Other than the strangeness, it was a nice room. The next day, we each got a private room.

But the one thing I never figured out is why was there a second bed in that room?

[One other year, my wife was with me and they gave us a suite at top of the Mirage just because they were short on rooms. That was nice because it was for the whole week.]

Apparently Mike is unaware that what happens in Vegas is supposed to stay there...

We took our teenage kids thru Las Vegas on the way to Disneyland, and stayed at the Luxor for one night. It was fun, clean, and reasonably priced. That was 10-12 years ago, so I'm definitely providing an old data point. We went over to the Bellagio, which was fun. It was hard to get them to leave and head to Disneyland, after seeing Las Vegas.

I think I was more anxious to go to Disneyland than they were ... :)

In September we found a special on Expedia-the Quad on the strip (formerly Imperial Palace) had rooms that netted out at about 75.00 and pretty nice too.

The strip appears congested but it is huge in scope. Walking from hotel to hotel along the strip takes time as the distances are deceiving. It is not like the boardwalk in AC. Depending on the time of year the excessive heat can be an issue. I've stayed at the Luxor as well as the Monte Carlo, both beautiful and huge properties.
I would avoid the "old" section as it is, in my opinion, dated and seedy....

My last trip to Vegas for NAB I was staying at the Aria--got there late Sat. and they ran out of rooms, so they put me in some kind of high roller suite. Really surprised they didn't make me move after the first night, but kept the room all four days (you can make out the separate bedroom off to the right, but you can't see the palatial bathroom and, yes, that is a full size grand piano in there):

276251

So my advice is arrive late Saturday night.

Stayed at the Mirage last summer for a week for a training conference. Nice location and close to everything on the Strip. Had fun walking up and down the strip and shopping at shopping center next door at Cesars. A beer at the Mirage was expensive, but so is everything in Vegas. Casino Royal across the street had $1.25 bottles of beer, so we headed over there in the evenings after discovering that. I am not a gambler, but enjoyed begin there and seeing the sights. Anywhere on the Strip is nice and you can spend lots of time just walking and seeing the sights of the strip.

Hilton Grand Vacation on the Strip near Sahara. Room should be in Tower Two facing the mountains. No casinos and relatively inexpensive.

Excalibur hotel about $23 a night Sunday to Thursday right on the strip next door to the Luxor. Bellagio if you want top class. Water fountain show runs every 15 mins right in front. Most hotels charge resort fees on top of room rates. Booking through one of the online agencies e.g. Hotwire can save you some money.

Stay as far from the strip as possible and take a cab (or drive in) when you want to walk the strip. This will be the cheapest solution.

I stayed at the Mirage more recently, and since then 2 times at the Monte Carlo. We have a business conference there every April. Most years it's been about 80-85 but last year 70s with wind, you just can't tell I guess. I would recommend the Mirage, the volcano is very cool. Also, see the fountains at the Bellagio, and if you get downtown the Fremont Street Experience is very cool. I'm no gambler either so look for other fun things to do. My favorite was hiking out at Red Rock Canyon, but go in the morning if you do it before it gets too hot. It's not a flat path, but actually climbing up on giant rocks.

Oh, and avoid big events. The Monte Carlo will be at about $59 (plus they all have a $20 resort fee) when I go, but in March there's a big Sharepoint conference and all rooms on the strip are over $200
