Saw an ad for an old vise for $50 and wanted to purchase something on Black Friday that was shop related. Went there and found an fully functioning and in-tact Emmert K-1 U3 Series vise. Didn't even know much about it, but looked worth $50 so purchased it. A member here generously offered to double the investment.

Congratulations. Totally justifies a "you suck". I have a turtle back Emmert. Great vices.

+1 on "you suck". I have one on my bench and it is a great vice. I paid about 8x what you did and mine didnt have the bench bracket. nice score.

Just in case you might be feeling a little buyer's remorse, here is a listing for an older Emmert vise.

Well that is certainly an eye opening revelation. Are the turtle versions of the vise more desirable or something like that?

Rich, I looked fr one for a while, and the turtle back ones were a little higher at the time. I think the Craigslist listed one is overpriced, your's was obviously about 10x low.

Back in the 1980s one of the pattern supply houses was selling some vises for $ 1200. Don't know the brand or whether they were new or old stock. And a few years back some company was selling a small knock off for two or three hundred. Mine is one of the few things I have that I can never use without being impressed.

+1,000,000 on the "you suck." :-)

That's a great find. I have always wanted one. I can hardly blame you for the gloat. Seems I am stuck with my Chinese workbench vise that racks terribly.

$50?

I paid $350 for mine, with a brazed repair and consider that a bargain.
Never, ever sell yours. It's an amazingly useful vise and the modern copies pale by comparison.

I hope all your teeth fall out, but one - so you can still have a toothache.

Not even to the SMC member who generously offered to immediately double the investment at $100?

Rich, please understand that with the cost of the 'copter that was a very fair offer!

Great find! And WHAT a price! I gave $150 for mine and it had been brazed once and needed an additional part brazed, plus needed completely restored. But what a vice! I use it all the time and find it to be one of the best things in the shop as far as usefulness is concerned. I lined my jaws with some 1/4" leather and that really helped with grip so I don't have to tighten the jaws so tight and stress things.

Is the leather glued to wood?

I've seen them with leather but because of size of the jaws and the adjustment to align , or shift OUT of parallel , I don't think they are really necessary . Rich one thing that is usually missing is the swivel plate that allows vise to grip something tapered in two directions . If you don't have it and decide you need it ,somebody is making and selling new ones.
