Not turned yet but hopefully soon! 4 burls I bought online from Australia and hand carried to Texas by my daughter. Top one is Coolabah 11" x 7", mid right is Red Coolabah, other two are Brown Mallee. Open to suggestions on how best to use these!

Price was really good, could hardly buy one here for what I spent on all 4! :)

you could make some cairn boxes, my rule is not more if any one burl per cairn box, but what do i know

They look great, figuring out what to use them for may a challenge.

Kelvin,
They all look fairly symetrical and I did one as a bowl and left all the prickly bits on it for a talking point, and it sits on 3 curved ebony legs.

Richard.

Being an Aussie I'd probably turn these into natural edge bowls. That way you get to keep the natural 'rawness' of the burl and obtaining a beautiful item at the end. Maybe do something like Terry Scott does:

Hope this helps!

Thanks Scott,

I hadn't remembered that Terry had done all these burls - but I should have!

Best to put in flat rate box and ship to Fbg TX. Second suggestion would be to add a glue block to bottom and turn NE with the burl ridges showing. Good gloat. More fun for you ahead. Glad you had a personal delivery.

Don't know if this will help Kelvin.
This is a York Gum Burl that I just finished.

Col, that is helpful! My wife and I are looking at various options trying to decide which way to go with these pieces!

1st, you stink! 2nd if you didn't know it already.... they are very hard and very stable to turn thin. Expect dust, not shavings.

A natural edged form with smooth vessel curves really show off Mallee caps. I have a few I got from Jim Syvertsen and need to make something out of them as well. Race ya!!

Scott, I assure you I shower every day! If it makes you feel any better I paid AUD 35 for the 4 burls plus AUD 21 to mail them to my daughter in Sydney. Grand total USD 55 :D

The race is on! :p
