I turned mine into a leg vise. Many don't like a leg vise's narrow jaw, nor the ergonomics of a pin board and low screw, but these things allow the vise to hold taller stock and to hold it extremely securely vs a face vise.

If you prefer a tail vise, without the carriage, it might be easier to install this screw as a wagon vise, which has the nice side effect of not requiring extra clearance on the tail end of the bench for the screw when the jaw is opened.

I have a tail vise, and while the hardware makes it a dream to use, i sometimes think a wagon would be better for me: the jaw is inset from the apron, which means my pieces would be more fully supported when clamped into place. I, however, don't find much need to clamp things to the face of the bench.

It's all about how you like to work.

Is this a new bench or retrofit?
