I have been turning a bunch of mesquite lately. I must have about 100 more blanks to turn! http://www.woodturnersunlimited.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif
All of these were turned from log to finish in one session. 220 grit, Danish Oil, and 3 wheel buffed.
C and C welcome. Thanks for looking!

Very nice. What is your wall thickness on those since you turned them to finish while green? Did you turn and then let air dry on the surface for a day or two before sanding, or did you sand while it was fresh cut/wet?

If you find that your shop is cluttered, I will make a drive down to take half of those 100 off of your hands :)

Beautiful wood turned into beautiful objects!
What is that filigree pieced in the last picture? Did you adapt something that originally had another life or what?

Did you turn and then let air dry on the surface for a day or two before sanding, or did you sand while it was fresh cut/wet? Alex, I used a chainsaw to cut the log in half, a bandsaw to round the blank, turned it, sanded it, and put Danish oil on it one right after the other. I usually let it sit a few days after that and then buff it. The Danish Oil cures inside of the wood and will allow the moisture to escape from the wood. Even though the bowl will look just the same after a couple of weeks, when you pick it up, it will be noticeably lighter in weight. I put Antique Oil on one before, which cures on the surface of the wood, and it totally messed up the wood and finish. The moisture could not escape through the Antique Oil. With mesquite, I don't think that the thickness of the wood has much to do with it. I have been turning them this way for years and never had a single problem. YMMV

Really nice looking bowls Robert! I still have the bowl I turned from the piece of mesquite you sent me several years ago.

Mesquite is one of the only woods I know of that you can turn green (without sap wood) and it will dry 1:1. Doesnt matter what thickness.
Nice bowls.
