I'm a rank amateur regarding woodworking, and am making some red cedar coasters for family members from the limb of a well-remembered but now defunct tree. I'm wondering what would be the best way to finish the coasters so they both show the natural coloration and will withstand the water condensation they'll undoubtedly have to endure. I have them done up through hand sanding, prefer to leave the bark intact, just need to select a finish. Suggestions?

thanks,

I would start by sawing a radius from edge to the center of the pith. That will allow the disk to move without splitting in other places. Then I would apply a coat of shellac such as Seal Coat. That slows moisture vapor transfer more than most other finishes. Then I would apply a good non-poly varnish. Pratt & Lambert 38 is excellent and light colored. Waterlox would be my other varnish choice if a more amber, darker varnish would work.
