View Full Version : Lap joint time bomb?

Thinking of how I plan to make a decorative cross, a lap joint seemed obvious to me and then what also seemed obvious was how this joint looks like a wood movement explosion waiting to happen.

So am I thinking about this wrong or is this joint not problematic in terms of expansion being trapped?

It'll be fine. There isn't enough there to expand and tear it apart.

That was what I was thinking/hoping. It will be 8/4 curly maple, saving as much thickness as possible.

Thanks, Myk.

I agree with Myk. I have made many of these type joints. There is just not enough area to cause trouble.

I made hundreds of crosses over several years for my dads church retreats using half laps, never an issue.

I use half lap joints not only in construction but also to make crosses for a friend who makes rosaries and gives them to fellow worshipers. In fact, he is coming over tomorrow afternoon and we will probably make parts for 100 or so crosses.

There is wisdom in a multitude of counsel.

Thanks, men.
