I am thinking about getting this chuck to use on my 1642 jet. Would the big chuck be too big for my lathe or should i
get the smaller 125? byron

The 125mm (5") is the larger chuck, the smaller is the HTC100 (4"). Is your 1642 a 2hp (220v) or 1 1/2hp (110v) model. A 5" chuck *may* be a bit heavy for the smaller motor. I would have to let someone else with a 1642-1 1/2 - which is what I use - that *has* used large chucks jump in. My chucks are all SN2s which are about the size of the HTC100. I would like larger jaws than the SN2 allows for turning platters.

I've happily used a Oneway Stronghold on a 1642 -- 1 1/2 for 5-6 years. Not quite a 5", but much larger than a SN2.

I have a HTC-125 with 5" jaws I use with no problems on my Grizzly G0698 18/47 just a slightly larger version os the Jet....my lathe is 2hp and the chuck with those jaws comes in at over 9 lbs........

I think if you are concerned, then go with the htc-100 which is 4" .......my youngest son has already ordered one as part of my Christmas present........I have and use several SN2's also.

I have the HTC100 and a SN2. The HTC100 with standard jaws comes in four ounces heavier than the SN2 with powergrip jaws. Given the mass of the nova powergrip jaws the body of the HTC may be up to a pound heavier than the SN2. I have a Nova 1624 lathe and I think either will handle anything I can turn. The chucks came in at: HTC - 6 lb 6 oz and the SN2 6lb 2 oz

Thom,
It's the 1 1/2hp

Thom,
It's the 1 1/2hp

I own a 1 1/2 and have turned on a 2hp. There is a noticeable difference, IMHO, which is why I asked. I did not have 220 available when I bought or I would have gone for the extra hp. I have stalled my machine out coring bowls, but used the same rig with no problem on a 2hp model.

So I might be a bit worried about a heavy chuck and a large, deep blank, especially if attempting to core multiple bowls from it. On the other hand, turning platters would probably be fine, especially as it would be rounded and somewhat thinned before being mounted on the chuck.

I think the 1 1/2hp Jet is smaller than any of the lathes HTC lists for that chuck. I plan on eventually buying a larger chuck myself, but it will be set up and dedicated for plates and platters and such with large diameter jaws. Right now I use the nylon jaws that Teknatool sells for the SN2 and they have served well, but I do not think I would trust them for a heavy bowl either.

Thom,

See my comment above, since I have the 1642 with 1 1/2. Most of the time I use a Oneway Stronghold which is 4 1/2" in diameter, and 8 lb -- much bigger/heavier than the SN2. I have turned bowls 15" in diameter and 6-7" deep without problem.

I have been thinking about this chuck. Using a NOVA 1624 1.5 hp I was thinking about the 5" but I am thinking i would be ok with the 4" after reading this. Anyone using the NOVA? Thanks, John...

Byron, late to the party, sorry. But the 100 would be plenty of chuck for your lathe. No, I don't think the 125 is too big, but not necessary. The 100 would handle anything you threw at it.

Hello,

I've been lurking and fairly new to turning. I have the NOVA 1624 and use the HTC 125 and love it. I don't think it's big at all. I turned a 16" platter using this chuck and it's stable. I even bought the large 5" jaws.

Hmmmm, not big? Ok...I suppose we all have our views on what constitutes a large chuck. What other chucks have you used to compare it with?

BTW, welcome to the Creek, Joven!

When I say its not big, I didn't mean that the chuck is small. I meant that the chuck is not intimidating. I used the WoodRiver chuck and didn't like it. It felt like the piece is not secure and is likely to fall off. One actually fell off and ran across the garage -- scary.
