Our house has one octagonal window opening . Window had rotted to mush . Bought a new one ,they have changed construction ,exterior trim now laps frame more ,so siding was too short and had to be replaced.Jamb is smaller (thinner)so sheathing had to be patched in . I wanted to nail through jamb rather than exterior trim but it was pretty flimsy so I wrapped glued canvas all around. I beveled top of top moulding 5 degrees and top of bottom piece 5 degrees. Treated with copper naphthalate, primed, glued canvas to the flat top and bottom of exterior moulding ,filled the factory nail holes, primed the canvas , put bead of caulk all around glass, painted all with 3 coats of paint. Friend installed it and did excellent job of flashing and drip capping the top 3 surfaces. Interior casing was terrible fit and had to be reworked.I should have just made a new one. Putting something like that ,unaltered ,in a hard to access place is a mistake.

Octagonal Window Quality Problems were evident 30+ years ago
I always hated to install them, I knew they would not last...
