I have a client that wants a 6' tall by 4' wide bookcase/cabinet with two wood framed bypass glass sliding doors. It is a simple Scandinavian design. I have not done the large bypass sliding doors before so I want to know what are my options for sliding the doors. How have you handled this? The doors are not going to be light so something other than making a slot and letting the doors slide wood on wood is necessary. It needs to be silky smooth and of good quality for this client. She's pretty picky about the details as am I.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Hafele offers lots of great solutions. Go to their Furniture/Cabinetry Hardware catalog Section 7. http://www.hafele.com/us/

Check out Pocket door hardware in general. You can frame around them with just a little thought and they will carry very heavy doors very smoothly. Just be sure when framing them to provide access to level the bar that the trolleys ride in.

I used pocket door hardware from Johnson Hardware

I used the ball bearing rollers and used three sets per door. It slides like it was riding on air. You can get the track in 16' lengths, but on up to 8' can be shipped by UPS. Fast service and great pricing.

As a maintenance carpenter and cabinet maker for out local district I build display case quite often with tall sliding bypass glass doors. We use 1/4 inch thick laminated safety glass. Below is a link to the type of hardware we use and it works very well. I'm not sure this is the same brand but its the same system.
