View Full Version : Drive spurs hardened?

I have a very low end lathe and the drive spur had gone walkabout. I believe it has an sae male thread on the shaft as opposed to a taper (going to measure tomorrow). Was thinking of turning a spur on the metal lathe and shaping the spurs with die grinder.

Are the spurs normally hardened? Im thinking not?

Any input appreciated.

I believe you'll find many different varieties of drive spurs in use, some I have are hardened, and most of the newer ones are not. Hardening would not be a priority for such an application.

I'm with Jamie, I have some that are and some that aren't.

Use what you have, I have an old 30's lathe that I made a spur out of 1018 cold rolled steel, it works fine.
