View Full Version : Montana drill bits any good?

I was attaching slides to some drawers this evening and broke the bit on a #6 self-centering bit from Rockler. This is the 2nd time in maybe 20 holes that the bit has broken. The self-centering mechanism doesn't work that great, not very smooth.

Instead of risking breaking off any more bits, I decided to replace the Rockler bit. I can drive to Woodcraft and pay $12 for a Vix-brand (good reviews on Amazon), or drive half the distance to Menards and get a Montana bit for $7. The Montana-brand bits are made in the USA, but I can't find any reviews of their self-centering bits, just other models (which are basically very positive).

Any opinions on Montana stuff?

BTW, one of the features I like of the Montana is the hex shank. The Vix is round shank. Also, the Montana is a drill/driver, so you can drill the hole, then flip it and drive the screw. Not sure I really need that. Hmmm...

I can only say the my 3 Vix bits have seen a lot of use, and have worked very well for 10+ years.
