This is my go-to finish for everything I make that goes outdoors. It looks great, it lasts a long time, it protects the wood from both moisture & sunlight, and it's a snap to repair/recoat.

Just don't be fooled by the labels on cans of "spar" varnish at the big box stores. The material is no better than any other varnish and will start cracking and growing mold in less than a year out in the weather.
