Hi,
does anyone here know of a machinist who could make a wooden dovetail gauge in metal? The problem I have with the wooden ones is the pencil deforms the edge. I can't find a machinist in my area anywhere.

I have two styles of gauges here and I want the one sitting on the top of the others to be made. The angle is a 1 in 7 slope. I don't like the saddle style gauges. I like this solid one piece gauge. Any takers?
thanx

I just read about one that came out new at woodworking in America. Can't find the article now.

Google Woodjoy Tools. They do a few gauges, including this one ..

Everything is a variation of a saddle. I do not think you can avoid this. There is a build pictorial of these on my website ...

He has them for sale. I've no experience with his work, just read his blog. He is here on the creek but might not mention them due to advertising restrictions.

Hi Derek,
I got a saddle gauge somewhere and I have LV verison of your brass ones - what I really want is my wooden one made in metal. I'm tired of making them because I wear them out.

I saw that one - it's $75 and it's a two piece gauge. I want a one piece, solid metal gauge. Paul Sellers has one that someone made for him but who, I don't know.

these are nice looking gauges, but they are two pieces - wood and metal and they are a saddle gauge.

Hi Joe,
I have all 3 of these gauges from LV

Hi Ralph

I am not sure if Lie-Nielsen still sell these, but I have a Rob Cosman-designed LN-made version that was given to me by Thomas LN several years ago. Is this what you are looking for ...

I could not find it on their website, but it does not hurt to ask.

Alternatively, here is another idea for a marker, my "dovetailed dovetail" marker (no, I'm not offering to make them - but they are easy enough for you to do) ..

Could you make a metal tongue with wooden cheeks to register it to the edge? Then the scribing edge would be metal, but you wouldn't need a machinist.

I believe Paul Sellers mentioned in one of his videos that someone at the castle he works in made it for him. It does look like a real nice gauge. I do think anyone with the proper metalworking skills could whip a batch of them up. My guess is there isn't a market for them as they would cost and quite frankly the LV ones do the job for the price for me... John.

If your goal is less deformation from the pencil, then why not soak your wooden gauges in cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy? That will prevent against pencils at least.

Prashun has a good idea and the epoxy or whatever would only need to be along the edges. Or make your wooden ones out of a harder wood.

Or... you could make one out of wood but line the marking edges with a bit of brass.
