Came across this on a non-woodworking site. surprised it hasn't been circulating given the recent press from LAP.

I'm always amazed by the small scale of the cabinet.

Enjoy,

For reasons that I can't quite figure out, anything normite usually gets no press from hand toolers, but Roy Underhill is showered with praise.

Somehow, I've seen that video or that episode before. The most interesting thing to me about the whole get-up is that two of the planes are transitionals.

Christopher,

The Studley tool chest has been mentioned here at SMC many times.

My recollection is even the video was linked in the past.

Though it is probably good to bring it up again as new folks often come by and do not have the time to read all the archives.

I stumbled onto SMC by an innocent search on Boiled Linseed Oil and haven't left since.

Here is another Studley thread found using the SMC search function:

"The most interesting thing to me about the whole get-up is that two of the planes are transitionals."

I thought that was interesting too, especially as he seems to have modified them, at least aesthetically. The japanning is removed from the metalwork, and I can't tell if the current finish is a light coat of patina on iron, or if they were bronzed , or even made up from bronze castings. The wooden stocks and knobs are also unusual, apparently not beech. So, he went to a lot of trouble about these planes, unless some company was producing a deluxe version of the transitional plane, which I doubt.

What's the Roy Underhill connection to the Studley tool cabinet? I wasn't aware of one, inquiring minds want to know!
