Any opinions (or actual experience) on best way and type of fastening for Southern Yellow Pine T&G 1x3 planking directly onto 1x6 joists 16" centers. Thanks, I know somebody must have done it.

Obviously I meant 2x6 joists (which I have sistered with another 2x6 since one 2x6 is not adequate for much of anything). My questions are really 15 guage 3" FINISH NAILS VERSUS THE TRADITIONAL 16 GUAGE BARBED NAILS, and what about glue. Tks.

I would reccomend using the standard hardwood floor nailer. They are available for rent at most rental stores for 15 - 20 dollars a day. No glue is needed.

Thanks, I did look into renting the nailer but was surprised that the nails are only 16 guage. I'm also considering using 2" framing nails after experimenting on the risk of too many split tongues. The 80 year old original flooring was nailed with 2" framing nails and it never split - todays lumber is not as good.
