Is there much of a difference in the thickness in 5/4 deck boards between the big box stores, ( Lowes, Home Depot), and regular lumber yards ?

yes there is. I just bought some this summer at HD for a dock extension project and the new boards were about 3/32 thicker. Now the new section and the old section aren't level with each other. I never thought this would have been a problem. Note - these were both treated

5/4 stock is 1" thick, but treatment and retained moisture can cause it to be thicker.

Maybe, but if it's pressure-treated, it'll be sopping wet when you buy it. Give it a few weeks in the sun and it'll shrink quite a bit as it dries.

Yes, I had the same experience as Pat. However, mine was from the same store, but 12' versus 8' length.

The same is true with HD's tongue and groove porch boards. I found out the hard way.
