Hi folks,
I have an old Stanley no.9 block plane that I am cleaning up. The last thing it needs is the blade ground and honed.
Does anyone know the proper grind angle for this puppy?

Thanks.

Jim

A lot of stanley's literature says 25 degrees for various planes. If you're using it on hardwoods and softwoods, it'll be a lot happier and longer lasting at 30 degrees.

I think it'll be the one grabbed most often; so 30 degrees it will be.
Thanks Dave.

Is it a plane "blade" or a plane "iron"? I never know which to call it.

Yes. Both are acceptable. I believe "iron" is the traditional term, although it's been many a year since this particular part was mainly of iron with a steel insert for the actual cutting edge. Some people say "cutting iron" just to be clear.
