A friend came by a while back and brought this old plane he had bought at a yard sale.... he had been wanting to make a user jointer out of it but since I started posting about plane making he asked if I'd fix it up for him. there were two problems... the abutments were at 14degrees! (why... ?) and the mouth needed cleaning and that would make it too wide so and mouth insert was in order.

I filed the abutment to a more proper angle (can't remember if I did 10 or 12... ) than made a new wedge.
the mouth insert was fun to do and came out really good for a first try at doing this post construction.

if it were me I'd replace the blade with somthing with more meat... it's a little flimsy, but still works quite well, after several mouths he is very happy with it so that's all that matters.

I also removed the old finish, planed the end grain, gave it some nice chamfers and such. but I was carful to keep the original brand marking.

Looks like it is working well.

If it were mine, the handle would get a bit of work to make it more comfortable.

yeah.... I did do that a little. if you look at the first and last picture you can see the first the handle is totally flat and the last it's a little rounded.
