How exactly do you know what you have. I just picked this up at a sale for not much $$$.

I flattened it a little and used it to touch up some chisels. It works! I see a very clear fine cutting surface. It is not fast cutting but it does give a high degree of polish.

How to determine if it is a translucent. That is the question.

Any help?

Thanks
Mark

translucent |transˈloōsnt; tranz-|
adjective
(of a substance) allowing light, but not detailed images, to pass through;

It appears to pass some light.

Sometimes it is better to base one's impressions on performance than on classification.

Often a finishing oil stone is not a fast cutting stone.

I wouldn't get hung up on terminology. Some translucents are very white and pass light very easily and some are yellowish and don't pass light as easily, but are very good stones, anyway.

Translucent isn't a real grade of stones, so you can't tell much from it. Density will tell you more, but using the stone will tell you the most. It should be a good stone.
