These look pretty cool. A bit pricey and they will be scorned by those who get a 'Tim Taylor' moment out of smacking a traditional holddown.

D'oh - now guess what I see.

I'll stick with mine with the one moving part ;)

Considering you can buy four traditional Gramercy hold fasts for the price of one Goose, I geese I won't be going Down this route.

I see at least a couple pluses here:
1) good for late-night work (no pounding), and
2) a short-depth post is available.

I suspect one of these will be joining my traditional holdfasts.

The Gramercy holdfast is actually not a traditional holdfast. Maybe the form and function look and act traditional but they are not made in a traditional manner. They are actually bent round bar stock opposed to a typical blacksmith made holdfast. That is not to say they aren't great. I own a pair and use them a lot. But I also own a LV screw holdfast that I absolutely love and do not feel like I over paid. Yes it is expensive but works flawlessly, it hold better than any holdfast I've owned to date. I would also pay the money for the Goose holdfast if it works as well as its' sibling.

Hey, that is a cool idea. I like that it can be done quickly and with one hand without having to reach for a mallet.

Heh :)

For me they are more "or what."

The Gramercy holdfast is actually not a traditional holdfast.

I'm not an expert on traditional tools, that would be Adam and the last time the words traditional and Lee Valley were discussed recently, the thread ended in tatters.

My view, I hit the top of the holdfast to secure it and then I hit the side to loosen it. I scheme that makes it's traditional (over modern gizmos).

I hear about the cast/extracted differences though.

Mines from Peter Ross so it's very traditional and the gramcery work the same way so I'd say there fairly traditional. But they are made differently and may not be as strong

Well I think they may well be even stronger. The Gramercy holdfasts are not cast so no chance of dropping and breaking them. I've read that Peter Ross is a kosher blacksmith so those will probably outlast the Syrian WWIII.
