I had a tree I cut down that had a very nice spalting/discoloration around the heart, but I wanted to show more than the standard form would allow (pith towards center, top/edge of bowl towards bark). So I took a piece, left some pith in as an experiment in drying, and turned it to show maximum pattern. The drying went very well, with only 2 small cracks that weren't that concerning. It is about 12" diameter, 4" tall, and about 1/2" wall thickness. I am really happy with the pattern and the pith not giving me any cracking problems. Some parts of the grain in the bottom of the bowl have a really cool jagged feathered/zig zag pattern that is really fine and striking. I suspect it is some form of poplar, but it has a very distinct odor when turning it green. I still need to put several more coats of general finishes wood turners finish on it before it is complete.
