A friend called today to offer congratulations on making it to the half-century mark. He made it seem like 50 is, well......old. How many of you have passed that mark?

Almost 13 years past. Your friend’s comment reminds me of a tongue in cheek comment I made to my mom when she turned 50. She said something about reaching middle age and I asked her “how many people do you know that are 100?”
She was not amused. Now that I’m almost 63 I can understand why..

Happy Birthday!

I'm there, and my aches and pains let me know. Still think of plenty of things left that I want to do. On the top is fishing out in the gulf stream.

Just a kid. Don't you know that 50 is the new 30? Heck, in April, I will have been married that long.

Congrats,

2 years to go for me in October, only time I notice my age is when I try to do something I did 30 years ago and realise I'm doing it slower or when I see mates from my school years and think "god they look old" then I realise I'm older than them.

cheers

Dave

Even reasonably good health is a blessing at any age but it might be more appreciated when you have 60 in the rear view mirror :)

10 years. I'd kill to be 50 again. No aches, everything worked, geez... 50!

2 years ago I was walking down a sidewalk and passed two women going my way, deep in conversation. Just as I passed her, one of the women flung her arm out, right at me. Nothing to do with me, just some sort of gesture to the other woman. Having gotten my black belt in karate 38 years earlier, I immediately threw up a block and started to counter strike. The instinct was there, but sadly the muscles just didn't respond, as she hit me in the head. At 50 I would have made it.

I am 29 years past it and feel great. I walk 6 to 8 miles per day and right on my ideal weight. Will be attending my 60th high school reunion a week from this Friday. Would I like to be 50, you bet.:D

Nine years past 50. I think that 75 years old is the new 50 years old. Some of my closest friends are 70+ and they don't seem any slower, mentally or physically, than my Dad was at 50. People are not just living longer, they are staying active and are contributing greatly to society even in their 80's or 90's. I think it is great.

50 is the new 39...which is why I count my birthdays as anniversaries of 39. :D 17 of them. :o And no, I don't consider myself "old", despite using that as an occasional excuse... :p

Well this Friday the 13th I will be 52 and the next day archery season for whitetail deer opens, so that is a good reason to get a shot at a booner! I suppose my used dude add would read: " 52 eyes are'nt blue, very high miles with convertible top (Bald) priced right for he decerning buyer who likes a slow limpy gait and creaking joints.

Take them all one day at a time and as they say "Dance like nobody is watching!"

"Dance like nobody is watching!"Jeff

At my age, they aren't.
My kids normally have their eyes covered when it happens.

I take my inspiration from that sage of the stage, Bugs Bunny...

Your comments certainly cheered me up; thanks. Your made a 50 year old realize he isn't old, but some of you ...... Well I feel like a youngster in the woodworking group. Is it typically an older person's hobby?

Not in my view. I started woodworking as a teenager. People interested in woodworking tend to stick with it much more than many other hobbies. You get to be creative, build things, learn, and buy tools. That's as good as it gets! :D

13 past here. They've started replacing parts on my frame so I figure I'm under an extended warranty. Look at it this way. 50 is only halfway to 100.

One other point to make. At 50 you are just entering your physical and mental prime. I don't mean to say that you are stronger at 50 than at 25, but you should be much stronger mentally and able to endure more than the mentally weaker younger people. A case in point from my own history. At 50, I climbed Mt Rainier up a very challenging ice-fall route, with three ice pitches of greater than 80 degrees (means standing on the front points of the crampons). At a younger age I likely would have quit before summitting due to mental fatigue.
