(the reason I ask is that the local hardware stores said 'no', and I can't find anything on any Canadian website - so I'm not sure if anyone down in the US has heard of this)

There are soooo many options for extruded metal thresholds that even if you could find a snap on extender it would be paired to a specific model, ergo, fat chance. I think you are facing the need to make an extension out of wood or find some existing product and make modifications to suit your circumstance.
