About a mile of walking through a lot of stalls of vendors, selling almost anything they could. Some of the items I walked on by 269819269821269822269823269824269826Afternoon of walking around. Did buy two block planes, and spent a whopping $8. Didn't even see all of the stalls, either. West Liberty, OH having a Labour Day at Lions Park fest, with a few hundred tractors, even had them all in a parade! about ten miles from my house. I did pass on that craftsman block plane @ $25! A rusty American Boy in a 110 size cost me $3.....Still going through photos of today, may post more, later..(if you like...)

Yep, I did say tractors, a sea of JD green and yellow, and a few others, too269827269828269829The white one was a golf cart that was re-made. Someone had even taken a pair of old sewing machines, added some wheels and now they are tractors made by Singer. Photo was too large for here.

At those prices I would have kept on walking too.

If you got a "thing" for tractor shows, next weekend (actually starting on this coming Thursday and running through Sunday) is the hugh "Nittany Tractor Show", just east of State College, PA (do a web search).

Tried going a few years back mid day on a Sunday, but the rain and last day had the show tearing down early. Last year I went on a Friday (by myself!) and it was well worth it. Huge flea market, just loaded with "tools of the trade" that the farmers that own tractors, would also own. One of the best things about this flea market was the very, very few "craft" tents (you know, the ones where the dealer goes to the nearest Wally-World and buys his goods). Lots of saw, chisels, planes of all sorts, anvils (I accumulate "mini-anvils and plumb bobs).

the two block planes that came home with me269830269831269832the one with the adjustable throat is a clone of Stanley, by Great Neck, complete with the handi-holds. Thinking maybe, just maybe the other MIGHT be an American Boy? Two different dealers here, two different approaches to old iron. One just sells as is, the other sprays a clear coat on ALL the planes he sell, even that Stanley #7 above had it on. AB was $3, the GN was $5.

The area between the base and the slider part was packed with sawdust. Otherwise, seems the move just fine. AB iron is quite nicked up, will have to put a new edge on it. Maybe a coat of BLO on that dried out knob?

Nice fordson butt warmer there (Dave - who comes from a long line of farmers, but is the first generation who didn't break a sweat regularly on one outside of hay season)

That looks enough like a Stanley to make me wonder if Stanley made them for Great Neck.

Most of the stuff at the dealer that had that Great Neck plane was coated with a clearcoat like stuff.. even this one269862saw a stanley scraper with the slotted blade at another dealer, along with it's green handled clone by Kunz, wanted $20 for either of them. Pass...

That Stanley No 7 for $45 looks pretty good.

That Stanley No 7 for $45 looks pretty good.

I am extremely not fond of the blue Stanley's.

Note the lateral lever, the bent over end style doesn't have a disk at the bottom.

The black hardwood handles are not much to write home about either.

This doesn't mean it wouldn't make a good user. It does make me think that next time I go out on a rust hunt I might take a small scrap of wood with me to check a plane's blade protrusion through its mouth.

Maybe that is an idea for a thread, The Rust Hunters Travel Kit.

My current #7 (a type 7) only cost me $21.25 tax included, a bit of labor (of love) to fix it up and a new blade.

You can see it here:

Alot of the planes at that vender's table were clear-coated too. Hides a lot of surprises that way. 269875Yep, it has been clear-coated. Some of the others on his table269876You might be able to see some of the ones with that coating on them. Average price for these? Around $25 -$40 each. Well, one in the back was $10, and still overpriced...

Other dealer did not coat their planes, though269877De planes, anyone? As for that little Craftsman block plane. for $25???? I mean, come ON now......

Was someone trying to save money when they made the lever cap on the one marked PEXTO on the blade?

that is the normal cap iron for a pexto plane, it would also have a pressed steel frog.. chipbreaker is sized for this plane, and will not work on the normal planes around it. Like that KK4 to the left of it.

That makes my ears bleed just thinking about riding with exhaust that close to my head. And I ride a Harley. :(
