Okay, another thread is going to the cats so why not a thread with our feline companions (or canine for that matter) who visit in our shop and maybe take out the rodents.

Here is my #1 cat, Skittles:

269763

Here he is sticking his tongue out at the camera. Actually for some reason he has his tongue out a lot.

269764

Here he is resting after a day of hunting mice.

He is actually a cat that was feral in our California neighborhood and adopted us. He didn't really like the idea of leaving the old neighborhood and bolted when we were moving. After a few months my wife went back and was able to catch him to move up here. He took a little while to get used to the new more open surroundings, but now seems to love it. During the warmer months he wants to go out first thing in the morning. Even with a fresh bowl of food he will only take a few bites before he runs to the door to be let out. At night, he likes to stay out as late as he can. He bangs the screen to let us know he is willing to come in for the night.

It may be hard to train cats, but they seem to know how to train us.

That's a great photo of him sleeping.

Our little girl started out as a little guy, on the word of a smart good friend. She had the little bags under her tail and was quite convincing - I did not overly scrutinize - I trusted my friend . Took "him" to the vet to be neutered and soon learned that we had a pregnant female. She too was feral. Spent the first 9 months of her life out in the woods and through a Maine winter. Now she lives with us and has still to decide if we are "safe" enough. Good pet but a little quirky. Yes, it is easy to be trained by them.

Anyway here she is - my shop cat Orlanda - Should have been Orlando - if you know the Virginiia Woolf story - but we settled on Orlanda, a.k.a. Lanni.

(He's not the messiah, just a very naughty boy).

Loyal guardian of the shed.
Well, not really. He just invites you in and slobbers all over you :)

By the way, I believe bloodhound slobber is a NASA grade adhesive.

This is Maggie, one of my pups. She's a Shih-Tzu that we rescued from the shelter after her previous owners left her outside, tied to a tree in front of the old pound for about 2 weeks during summer. When she was found, she was gaunt, had skin infections, and was severely dehydrated.

Now she is kept inside, fed well, and hides under my bench when it rains storms. :) Sometimes she comes to nib-nose, generally after she hears me string together several dirty words.

269814

She doesn't help much, as much as just supervises. :)

Maybe better it be a Cat Haven, than a Cat House?

Hmm, I may not have room either. I have 8 German Shepherds, 2 Australian Cattle dogs, a Lancashire Heeler, two cats, do we count snakes?? Although they are well socialized it is a challenge getting them all to hold still for a picture. The GSD's start trying to herd the cats, the little Lancashire Heller tries to herd the GSD's, the cattle dogs start leaping on the backs of anything not moving too fast. Basically its chaos. I will see what I can do though later on.

Thanks Bruce,

someone had to give Derek a challenge in the cute department. Ice loved doing it, he does not normally get to do downs on a workbench although we do practice in as many weird places as we can. I have to watch my dogs in the shop as they tend to make large pieces of wood into smaller pieces if they get the chance.

Oh my! I can't believe I'm just now getting around to posting to this thread which is clearly the best thread on SMC ever.

Here's the gang....all of them are rescues.

270263

Above is Bobbie. Our little bobtailed princess. She was the first pet we adopted together, and i only girl. She was an SPCA rescue that was found injured and her tail had to be amputated. We saw her in the window of a Philly pet shop that helps to adopt out rescue cats and couldn't resist.

270261

Next we have have Totem (top) and TJ, short for Totem Junior (lying on his side on the step)....they are not related by blood. Totem was adopted from a shelter in New Orleans where we lived for 4 years. TJ, his little doppelganger was a feral kitten that we started feeding outside our house when we moved back to Philly last year. After feeding him for a couple weeks we decided to trap him to get him fixed. The plan was to re-release him but he was so small (and we thought young) that we decided to keep him thinking that he was still young enough to tame. Well as it turns out he was just very malnourished and after a vet looked at his teeth it was determined that he was actually like 6 mos to a year old (too old to make un-feral by most standards). He remains pretty distrusting of people, but we decided to keep him anyway, as he seems very happy living in our house and gets along well with the other cats. The funniest part, is that he more or less imprinted on Totem right away and LOVES him. He follows him all over the house and copies everything he does. We joke that TJ thinks the big Totem (who is male) is his mom. It's very charming to observe.

270262 270267

Then there is Mogwai. He was another cat that came off the street in our neighborhood. We had seem him around as a stray for several weeks, digging in the trash and such, and anytime we got near him he would run so we thought he was feral. Then one day he was milling around on the front porch so I put out some food out for him. As soon as I gave him some food he started rubbing up against me and trying to follow me back into the house. I went in and an hour later stepped back out and he was still out there, and again started rubbing up against me and and trying to come in. Well at that point we just couldn't say no, so we took him in got him tested and vaccinated and kept him as a pet. Despite being a street cat he is the friendliest of all 4 of our cats. My guess is that he was someones pet once and got dumped, which is sadly far to common. I've included a picture of me with Mogwai on my shoulder just to finally solve the mystery of who is Chris Griggs (though that's a terrible picture, I'm usually much more handsome).

270266 270264

And last must not least we have Remy who isn't actually our dog anymore but I still consider him and honorary member of the family. My wife found Remy by her place of work when we lived in NOLA. He was in pretty rough shape and had a clearly been dumped. Despite this, we did try to locate and owner initially and when that failed we took him in. He cleaned up nicely, and it turned out that he was presumably a pure bred Bichon. After taking some training classes and personally spending a lot of time training him he became the sweetest little dog. Just a great little friend to have around. As much as we loved him it would have been difficult for us to keep him when we moved back to Philly, but my sister-in-law just happened to have a friend who was looking to adopt a rescue dog at that time. So when we moved back north we took Remy to live with a new family in North Brunswick New Jersey. He has a big yard, a loving family, and is very very happy. I only had him for 6 months, and he has been with his new family for over a year, but I still think of him as my dog.

Here's my neurotically clingy shop dog. 100% mutt from the DC Humane Society--probably part Rottie, part American Boxer. Got her when she was about a year old, already missing her tail. Even though she's a complete wuss, she's 60 lbs of muscle who likes loudly and excitedly running to the door whenever someone rings the doorbell, which scares the bejezus out of the Chinese delivery guy.

Yeah, "kitties" are pretty much his main schtick. If you have Netflix online, one of the movies is on there. It's pretty awful but also pretty funny. I haven't seen much of the show either. I should have Netflix send me the show on DVD...I enjoyed the movie and I hear the show is MUCH funnier. Those glasses are pretty sweet, alas I have 20/20 vision so no glasses would magnify my eyes like that and still allow me to see at all.

Thanks Jim. They are great company and we love them dearly. I also love to hear about other people loving there rescues. There are just so many cats and dogs that need homes (not even counting the truly feral/unadoptable ones). The hard part for us is/will be resisting the urge to take more off the street. There is a never ending cycle of homeless/hungry cats and kittens passing through the neighborhood. Fortunately, Philly has a pretty active Trap-Neuter/Spay-Release community and I hear they are making a dent in the feral cat population.

My parents live along a major highway. When I grew up, we pretty much got to take whatever animals that came along - people dumped cats all the time. Never did see a dog, but they don't just hang around like cats will. Taking in every single one would, like you say, present a problem, though. In my parents' case, they don't even like cats so much, but they usually will have two strays at a time and try to place any extras that come.

Tony Shea

Good stuff Chris, nice to see someone attempting to put a dent on the disposable pet situation. I truly don't understand the nature of some people with pets. My parent's neighbors just lost a dog due to their negligence. They let their dogs wander around the street without anyone around. My mother had been up there a number of times and had the door slammed in her face and told it was none of her business. Well she called animal control after several attempts to be civil but they never witnessed the animals wandering when they showed. A couple mornings ago my mother left the driveway for work and was greeted by the same dog dead in the middle of the road.

My girlfriend and I are HUGE animal ppl and have contemplated starting a cat sanctuary on my property. We decided financially it is impossible at the moment but is still our dream someday.

I agree that this is one of my favorite threads on SMC.
