Just finished a maple bowl with a carved maple leaf. First, I turned the outside of the bowl on my lathe and mounted it ready for carving. Here the leaf pattern has been applied and I've outline the leaf exterior with a V-tool.

After finishing the carving, I remounted the bowl on my lathe and turned the inside, then applied finish. Here are some 'completed' photos.

Nice work. I like the carving. It adds another aspect of wood work.

Great job! I've tried a little bit of carving, but my results were not near as good as yours.

That looks fun. Can I ask where you purchased the chuck holder?

Yeah, seen that one. More interested in the one Tom has that bolts to the bench rather than in your tool post. Looks like a Veritas design.

Jack ... the carver's vice is from Lee Valley as is the 5/8" dia rod that is screwed into the bottom of my Nova chuck. The carver's vice does mount on the underside using a bolt through one of my bench's 3/4" dia bench dog holes. Once mounted, the whole assembly is quite solid, easily adjustable, and offers the carving billet at a comfortable height for knife or mallet & gouge carving. I also used this configuration of carver's vice/chuck adapter/chuck on my drill press to drill some consistent-depth indexed plug holes on the sides of another bowl that I turned. Lee Valley offers a number of rod/chuck adapters for different tpi chuck sizes.
