These are both from a tree a friend pulled out of a small river. The wood was pretty waterlogged when I got it and it has taken most of the summer to dry it out. It's Box Elder burl. This first one is a hollowform vase with a little of the natural burl edge and a flush fitting walnut collar. About 7" x 7", finished with AO and buffed.

The second one is from the same burl. It's a lidded jar with a natural edge. The lid and knob are one piece. It's also about 7" x 7" and finished with several coats of AO and buffed.

Stunning, that's my taste in turning. The use of black epoxy? is original and tastefully done.

Those are both beautiful pieces Curt! The black epoxy adds some nice contrast. Both forms look great, I don't think I could pick a favorite!

Congrats on getting the WoW cover the other day with the jar. I do like the jar but the HF just blows me away. The black with the box elder is beautiful!

Thanks you guys! I always appreciate the encouraging comments around here.

But to clarify one thing, there isn't any black epoxy on the hollowform. The wood is weathered and kind of a dark gray on the surface. So the little valleys in the burl that are just the natural color of the wood are what you're seeing. They turned a dark charcoal color with the AO. And my photography skills probably make it look black.

Thanks again!
