Yes it works very well for keeping sand out of the pipe.

Just about every french drain system for houses uses similar stock...

If they don't, then I'd suggest it's not actually a french drain ;)

Actually , some of the French drains I have are the clay tile laid end to end type with tar paper over the joints. They still work, but I'm sure there is a lot of sediment in them.

We had a retaining wall put up about ten years ago.It has a gravel lining about a foot wide separated from the dirt by landscape cloth. Water drains to perforated sock covered pipe at wall bottom and then through solid underground pipe to a stream. It worked right off and has not clogged .
